Chief Protagonist At Chester

Chief Protagonist At Chester

Former Dante third has tumbled down the weights but demonstrated signs of ability when fourth last time out.

It’s not often you find a horse that finished third in a Dante lurking in a Chester handicap but that’s where Indian Chief finds himself.

He never quite lived up to the early promise as a three-year-old and left Aidan O’Brien at the end of 2013.

Since then it has all been downhill. His 2014 season for Dandy Nicholls was a complete write-off, beaten 15 and 22 lengths in 2 starts. However, connections persevered and 19 days ago there were signs of life at Thirsk.

Pulling hard and forced to race in rear behind a pedestrian gallop (116.1% finishing speed) he made good progress as the race developed into a sprint for home.

Indian Chief was beaten 2.75 lengths but he ran the same closing sectional as the winner and wasn’t hard ridden when his chance of victory had gone.

Having been rated 110 in his heyday, he is down to a more workable mark of 86 and could be a useful handicapper if Dandy Nicholls has found the key to him.

He handles give in the ground, is well drawn in stall 5 and is an attractive price at 12/1 (Skybet).
