Champion Chase Tips: Special Tiara

champion chase a bit special

Earned a big sectional upgrade by winning the Desert Orchid Chase despite setting an overly strong gallop.

Notwithstanding the inaccuracies in data, there has been one stand-out sectional performance in the lead up to the Champion Chase – Special Tiara’s win at Kempton.

With the likes of Sprinter Sacre and Sire De Grugy in the line-up, it might seem like madness to hype an outsider but his performance was something special.

Barry Geraghty set a blistering gallop in the Desert Orchid chase on ground that was official called ‘soft’. It was a brave tactic but he had a willing partner.

From 3 out Special Tiara came home in 40.6s, which is 93.8% of the average race speed and indicates a horse slowing down and getting tired.

Under the circumstances, he did incredibly well to keep going and prevail by 2.25 lengths from Balder Succes who has won his next two starts.

Special Tiara finished sixth when we tipped him for the Champion Chase last year but he was taken on for the lead and clattered several fences early in the race.

The 8-year-old seems better than ever and on fast ground he could prove difficult to pass if landing an uncontested lead. At 25/1 (William Hill) he is a cracking bet.
