Cheltenham Tips: Knockara Beau

Has a terrific record at Cheltenham and soft ground in his favour. Respectable sixth in last year’s Gold Cup.

Last year readers probably thought I’d lost the plot when I tipped Knockara Beau to win the Gold Cup at 100/1. Suffice to say he didn’t win, but he ran a perfectly respectable race to finish sixth.

This time round he is down in grade and has a realistic chance of winning the 2.40 Cheltenham.

The key to this horse is the going and the track. He is 6/16 on ground described as soft or worse but only 3/23 on good to soft or better. However, his record at Cheltenham is even more impressive.

Racing Post Ratings earned at Cheltenham:
149h-150-158-149-130-149h-153h-154-151-154-PU-149h
h denotes hurdle race, the rest are chases.

In 12 starts round Cheltenham he has recorded a rating of at least 149 on ten occasions. Most recently, he finished fourth in the Cleeve Hurdle behind Reve De Sivola and Oscar Whisky, horses expected to fight out the World Hurdle.

That is rock solid form and racing off a mark of 142 he looks well handicapped. Aged 10, his powers don’t appear to be on the wane and at 16/1 (Bet365) he looks a good each-way bet to finally taste Festival glory.
