Champion Chase Tips: Sprinter Sacre

Champion Chase Tips: Sprinter Sacre

Looked close to his best when winning the Shloer Chase in a fast time and Cheltenham brings the best out in him.

Sprinter Sacre will go down as one of the great steeplechasers of the modern era but from a betting perspective he’s never been much use. If you’d put a £1 on all his races you’d be £3.33 up – you can admire his brilliance but it’s doesn’t really help the bank balance. That could all change in the Champion Chase.

Last season was a minor disaster for Sprinter Sacre, four defeats in four races including two where he was pulled up spelled the end, especially after his fibrillating heart. But this season he is back.

Sprinter Sacre was at his imperious best when winning the Shloer Chase by 14 lengths, earning a sectional adjusted speed rating of 152, not far off his peak. Victory in the Desert Orchid chase at Christmas was hard earned but two wins in a row suggest he is back on track.

The problem with Sprinter Sacre this year is not staying healthy - it’s beating Un De Sceaux. Last year’s Arkle winner is a top-class horse and he cemented his position at the head of the market with a strong win in the Clarence House Chase.

At 8-years-old he is younger that Sprinter Sacre but his adjusted speed rating at Ascot was 148, which leaves them level pegging.

The disparity in the betting between the two seems wrong and for almost the first time in his career Sprinter Sacre is a backable price.

If he were to win, we’d make more than his previous 22 starts combined. At 11/2 we also get our money back as a free bet with Paddy Power if he finishes second
