Champion Chase Tips: Special Tiara

Beat Sire De Grugy at Aintree last year and record on good to soft ground or better is 211513.

Sire De Grugy has taken over as the top 2-miler in Sprinter Sacre’s absence and is a worthy favourite for the Champion Chase. My one concern however is the track. He has won 8 out 11 chase starts but two of those defeats have come at Cheltenham.

The third of those defeats came at Aintree behind Special Tiara and that form needs revisiting.

Sire De Grugy wasn’t at his best that day but take nothing away from Special Tiara, he battled Overturn for the lead the entire race, eventually winning by 1.75 lengths.

The 7-year-old is one of the lowest rated horses in the field but he’s a different proposition on good ground.

His record on ground rated yielding to soft or quicker is 211513 and he ran a fine race in the Shloer Chase behind Kid Cassidy and Sire De Grugy when setting a very strong pace.

This will be the fastest ground he has encountered since Aintree last year and he has better than an outside chance at 20/1 (BetVictor).
