Beverley Bullet Tips: Rocky Ground

Blitzed the final 3f in 34.5s on his last visit to Beverley and a repeat performance should be good enough.

The likes of Pearl Secret, Mirza and Mecca’s Angel have come to Beverley looking for soft ground but it is unlikely they will get it.

The going is officially ‘good to firm, good in places’ and there isn’t any significant rain forecast.

Pearl Secret arrives with strong form in the book but the difference in price between him and Rocky Ground is hard to fathom.

There was only half a length between the pair in the Palace House Stakes earlier in this season, and Pearl Secret had the benefit of a run that day.

Rocky Ground has spent the rest of the season plying his trade over 6f, with varying success. He took a Listed race at Windsor, ran well in the Wokingham but was beaten by the draw at Newbury and a slow start at the Curragh.

I’m willing to excuse his latest flops because of his early season form and he is also a previous course and distance winner.

Roger Varian’s sprinter came from an almost hopeless position to nab Addictive Dream on the line in a conditions event last September. Considering the early pace was moderate (overall finishing speed 101%) it was a decent performance.

Rocky Ground covered the final 3f in approximately 34.5s, which is amongst the quickest sectionals I have on record at Beverley, notwithstanding the fast ground.

A repeat of that performance should see him outrun odds of 9/2 (Paddy Power).
