Arkle Tips: Grandouet

Runner-up at Sandown in a time quicker than Sir De Grugy’s Tingle Creek victory. A talented performer on his day.

On his hurdling form, Grandouet would be one of the favourites for the Arkle (2.05 Cheltenham). Unfortunately he has made a mess of his chasing career to date, failing to win in three starts.

He unseated on his first chase start at Sandown before putting in an excellent performance when second to Hinterland in the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase.

Impressively, his second place came in a faster time than Sir De Grugy’s victory in the Tingle Creek.

Typical of Grandouet things went wrong again at Kempton when he was soundly beaten by Dodging Bullets but unlike the betting markets, I’m willing to forgive his defeat on soft ground.

Grandouet two-mile record by going

Soft or slower:3312FU2

After the recent dry spell, he should get his favoured ground at the Festival and it is worth noting he was going well in last year’s Champion Hurdle before falling.

If he can avoid the misdemeanours that have hampered his career then he could spring a surprise at 11/1 (Paddy Power). Back him each-way and get ¼ odds for at top-3 finish.
