All-Weather Middle Distance Championship Final

Did best of the front-runners in the Winter Derby and from a good draw he could turn the race into a tactical affair.

Finals day at Lingfield reaches its climax with the Middle Distance Championship at 5.20.

There quite a mix of abilities on show with at least five horses struggling to compete judged on their official marks.

Grandeur is favourite to avenge his defeat in last month’s Winter Derby and although he has a better draw, there are better value options in the race.

The Winter Derby is the key form to analyse and thanks to TurfTrax sectional timings, we get a detailed picture of the race.

Luke Morris gave Robin Hoods Bay a terrific ride, shielding him from the early gallop thus conserving his strong finishing burst as the leaders struggled to change gear.

Dick Doughtywylie finished fourth but emerges with credit having raced close to the pace throughout.

His finishing speed of 102.8% is identical to that of Grandeur (both had wide draws to overcome) but he finished ahead of the favourite despite racing under greater duress.

It should be noted there was no pace collapse, but the race was run at an unusually solid gallop by Lingfield standards; where most middle distance contests are run at a crawl.

Jockeys will be reticent to set-up the race again for Robin Hoods Bay, therefore we might get a slowly run affair that turns into a sprint finish.

This would suit Dick Doughtywylie who won a Listed race in similar circumstances back in December.
