2000 Guineas Tips: War Command

The Dewhurst winner comes out top on speed ratings and on better ground we might see a reappearance of the horse that thrilled at Ascot.

The 2000 Guineas (3.50 Newmarket) is the first classic of the season and despite what the market might say, the race has an open feel about it.

Kingman is at the head of the market after his 4.5 length win in the Greenham but he might have been flattered that day.

The first, third and fourth horse home all came from the rear of the pack and sectionals confirm it was a strongly run race.

Races at Newbury normally have a finishing speed well below 100%, meaning horses are slowing down in the final 2f but several of the field had very little left in reserve even accounting for the ease in the ground.

Kingman might still be a very smart horse, but it is dangerous to get carried away by the visual impression he has created.

Of the main protagonists, War Command comes out top in speed ratings and is overpriced at 7/1.

He looked a world-beater when trouncing a useful field in the Coventry and although there has been the odd hiccup since, he still rates an excellent prospect.

He was workman-like when taking the Dewhurst but he made up ground off an even gallop despite tacky underfoot conditions.

Conditions should be quicker at Newmarket on Saturday, and at 7/1 (Betfred), War Command can deliver Aiden O’Brien his fifth 2000 Guineas in ten years.
