WGC Mexico Championship: Gary Woodland

WGC Mexico Championship: Gary Woodland

Runner-up at the Honda Classic his third top-10 of the year. Ball-striking is up there with the best.

The first World Golf Championship of the season is off to Mexico with Club de Golf Chapultepec hosting the Mexico Championship.  A very strong field (only Jason Day is missing from the World top-50) compete on a new course and it’s difficult to know where to start.

The 7,330 yards, par-71 course will be new to the players but the other unusual aspect of this week’s venue is the altitude. The clubhouse is approximately 2,400 metres above sea level, so expect the ball the travel further in this rarefied atmosphere.

Big hitters could prosper and I like the way Gary Woodland is rounding into form. Since the start of the year he’s finished 6-20-MC-5-2 and is making the kind of steady improvements that should see him start contending in majors (hello Augusta) and WGCs more regularly.

Woodland’s wedge play still needs improvement but that is an area we know Butch Harmon is working on. After that there is plenty to like. Woodland is ranked in the top-20 tee-to-green and his putting is much improved. At 50/1 (Paddy Power) he is a good each-way bet with 6 places at 1/5 odds.
