WGC HSBC Champions Tip: Hideki Matsuyama

WGC HSBC Champions Tip: Hideki Matsuyama

Finished first and second on his last two starts in Asia and can improve his moderate record in this event.

Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy head the market for the WGC HSBC Champions but neither has played since the Ryder Cup so we don’t know what sort of shape their games are in or how much they have practised.

From the 33/1 or lower price bracket, I prefer to see some preparatory form in Asia and that leads me to Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama. Both are similar prices but the second place at the CIMB Classic tips the balance towards the Japanese golfer.

The 24-year-old has established himself as one of the brightest young talents in the game and winning a WCG or major is the next step for this multiple winner on tour.

Tee-to-green there aren’t many better than Matsuyama and it was encouraging to see him find some form on the greens as he made 23 birdies and ranked sixth in putts per GIR at the CIMB Classic.

Matsuyama has finished 15-24-5-1-2 in his last five starts, the last two coming in Asia and the HSBC Champions looks the ideal event for him.
