Wells Fargo Championship Golf Tips: Jim Furyk

jim furyk

Four top ten finishes in seven appearances make him a man to follow at Quail Hollow.

We return to Quail Hollow for the Wells Fargo Championship, a tournament Rory McIlroy won in such stunning fashion last year. His Sunday 62 was one of the finest rounds of the year but at 14/1 he is too short to go in again. At double his price I’m going with another past winner, Jim Furyk.

Quail Hollow is one of the toughest courses outside of the majors and to win you need to drive the ball well. Last year McIlroy did just that, arguable one of the best long hitters in the game, he finished T23 for driving accuracy and 8th for distance. Although comparatively short, Furyk ranks 9th in driving accuracy this season, perfect for a track where you need to find fairways.

The American also has course knowledge on his side, having played in all but one of the last eight editions. A winner in 2006, his record reads: 7/11/7/MC/1/2/MC - impressive even accounting for two missed cuts.

Furyk’s recent form is also good. A top 25 finish in the Masters was followed up by a T21 at The Heritage. Playing in the final group the result should have been better, but you can excuse the poor final round as a dubious ruling distracted him.

At 28/1 you can be sure he will be in the mix come Sunday.
