Wales Open Tips: Seve Benson
Finished T8 last year despite ranking 70th in putts per GIR. Has the game for Celtic Manor and showed up well in Switzerland a fortnight ago.
The average winning score over the past five years at Celtic Manor has been 9.4-under par, the Twenty-Ten course is long and tough but that is ideal for Seve Benson.
The 27-year-old is a terrific ball striker; he hits it long and straight and if he can make a few putts this could be his week.
Last season he finished a highly commendable T8, fighting back well after a poor opening 76.
Benson ended the tournament seven shots behind the winner but for a cold putter he could have won.
The Englishman ranked 70th in putts per GIR, of the players that made the cut only Eddie Pepperell fared worse on the greens.
After a mid-season break due to injury, Benson has regained his form quickly with a T13 finish in the European Masters.
His game is perfect for Celtic Manor and he can easily improve on last year’s top-10; making him excellent value at 100/1 (William Hill) with ¼ odds for a top-5 finish.
