Wales Open Tips: Ricardo Santos
Ranked fifth for GIRs last week at Gleneagles, hinting at a return to his early season form.
Ricardo Santos started the season like a train with six consecutive top-30 finishes and four top-10s. He’s cooled off since then but his closing round of 67 at Gleneagles hinted at a return to form.
Tee to green, Santos played beautifully all week in Scotland, making just seven bogeys and ranking 5th for GIRs. The problem came on the greens, where he simply couldn’t hole enough putts.
There isn’t anything fundamentally wrong because the 30-year-old ranks 35th in putts per GIR on tour, it was probably just one of those weeks when they didn’t drop.
Although Santos does not have much of a record at Celtic Manor, one missed cut from one start, he is a tour winner and therefore shouldn’t be discounted at 125/1 (Betfred). Back him each-way and get ¼ odds for a top-5 finish.
