Wales Open: Maarten Lafeber

Qualified for the US Open on Monday and has a good record in Wales.

For the second week in a row we have a high quality European field, this time gathering at the Celtic Manor resort for the Wales Open. A collection of Ryder Cup stars top the betting but the likes of McDowell, Fisher and Jimenez aren’t playing well enough to warrant taking the short odds.

Looking down the field there is considerable value, particularly the 200/1 on Marten Lafeber. The Dutchman has a good record at Celtic Manor having made eight out of ten cuts. Last year he finished a personal best of twelfth. Going into the final round tied for seventh a double bogey scuppered his challenge early on, eventually he finished T12.

Lying 117th on the money list, his season had been unspectacular, but on Monday this all changed. After finishing second on eight-under at Walton Heath he booked a place at the US Open, finishing ahead of the likes of Ross Fisher and Colin Montgomerie. It was a welcome return to form and if he can carry the good feeling to Wales he could look overpriced at 200/1.

Totesport are best price and have each way terms of ¼ odds for a top five finish.
