Valero Texas Open Tip: Trey Mullinax

Last year's top-4 were all massive hitters, but not big on accuracy. Forgiving off the tee, Mullinax should enjoy this week's test and he arrives in good form.

Trey Mullinax has been conspicuous by his absence, in these pages at least but he’s not gone unnoticed or unbacked by this writer (super-fan). The 25-year-old has hit a promising run of form making six of his last seven cuts. He showed up well at the Valspar (8th) and was one round away from contending at the Corales Club Championship (T22).

Examining the statistics, his strength are the same before - strength.

Mullinax leads the tour in driving distance, averaging a mammoth 318 yards and is 17th for strokes gained off the tee, so enough of them are staying in play.  That shouldn’t be a problem at TPC San Antonio which is forgiving off the tee. Last years top four were Chappell, Koepka, Finau and Kevin Tway. All four finished the season ranked inside the top-25 for driving distance and outside the top-115 in driving accuracy.

Mullinax therefore fits the profile and having recently announced that he and his wife are expecting their first child perhaps it could be a double celebration in Texas this weekend.
