Valero Texas Open: Carlos Ortiz

Starting to recapture the form that made him a star and 3-time winner on the Web.com Tour. Has a couple of top-10s this season and best of T15 at this event in 2015.

It’s five years since Carlos Ortiz earned battlefield promotion from the Web.com Tour, winning three times in the 2014 season. Unfortunately he never quite delivered on his promise but he’s still only 27-years-old and entering his prime.

With two top-10s this season there have been hints that Ortiz might deliver on the big stage and his T9 at the Genesis Open in an elite field, reads very well. His underlying statistics are nothing special but ranked 51st in driving distance he has the required length off the tee, whilst he is also 60th in approaches from over 200 yards.

Last weeks T37 at the Corales was fairly humdrum but he drove the ball beautifully, ranked 6th in driving accuracy and 16th for driving distance.

In two visits to TPC San Antonio, Ortiz has finished T15-MC firing rounds of 79-67-70-73/78-67. That is quite a range of scores from a small sample size but at his best he can go low around this layout. At 175/1 he is worth chancing.
