US Open Tip: Tony Finau
Has four top-20 finishes in majors including T14 at similar length par-70 Chambers Bay. Ranked 15th in adjusted scoring average and enjoying a strong season.
With no par-3 contest to worry about Tony Finau should be spared any dislocated ankles - good news for those thinking of backing. Having said that it didn’t stop him finishing T10 at Augusta and he carries some excellent form into the US Open.
Measuring 7,445 yards Shinnecock Hills is long by par-70 standards and is only 47-yards shorter than Chambers Bay. Being long off the tee is an advantage this week and don’t let the fescue grass put your off. The fairways at Shinnecock Hills are also wide by US Open standards, which is what we need for a player ranked 197th in driving accuracy.
Apart from that there is plenty to like about Finau’s statistics. He is 15th in adjusted scoring average this season and 11th in the PGA Tour’s all-around ranking. The 28-year-old is without a win on tour this season but has five top-10s to his name and showed up well with a T13 at the Memorial Tournament.
Finau is also building up a good body of work in majors. He is 6/8 in cuts made with finishes of 14-10-MC-18-MC-27-44-10 with a T14 at the aforementioned Chambers Bay. With Paddy Power going 66/1 with 1/5 odds for a top-10 finish, he is a cracking each-way bet.
