US Open 1st Round Leader Tips: Garth Mulroy

Finished second in US Open qualifying at Walton Heath. Michael Campbell came through the same route to win at Pinehurst in 2005.

Michael Campbell famously came through qualifying at Walton Heath to win the last US Open staged at Pinehurst and history could repeat itself to a certain extent.

I don’t believe a player from International Qualifying will win the tournament but they might show up on the leaderboard for the first day.

Walton Heath and Pinehurst both have an inland-links feel and course form could be transferable.

Garth Mulroy finished T2 at Walton Heath and his form on such courses make him a lively first round leader bet. His best result on the European Tour last season was a sixth placed finish at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

The South African has been plying his trade of late on the Web.com Tour with some success. He has two top-15 finishes in five starts and shot an opening 64 at the Chile Classic to prove he can shoot low first round scores.

A US Open victory looks beyond the 35-year-old but he is a cracking each-way bet to be first round leader at 300/1 (Bet365) with 1/4 odds for a top-5 finish.
