Turkish Airlines Open Tip: Lucas Bjerregaard

Turkish Airlines Open Tip: Lucas Bjerregaard

Should enjoy the heathland style course having twice come through US Open Qualifying at Walton Heath. Arrives on back of excellent ball-striking display in Portugal.

The Turkish Airlines Open remains in the golfing hotspot of Belek this week but moves venue to the Regnum Carya Resort. A heathland inspired golf course, it has the feel of some classic Surrey venues with elements of Wentworth, St. George’s Hills and Walton Heath.

The Carya Resort is much more tree lined than Walton Heath but the bunkering and layout are very similar and that might play to the strengths of Lucas Bjerregaard. The big-hitting Dane twice came through US Open qualifying at Walton Heath (in 2014 and 2015) and there should be enough room this week in case his driver becomes wayward.

The 25-year-old finished T12 on his last start in Portugal but it was one of his best ball-striking displays of the year; he ranked in the top-15 for driving accuracy, distance and GIRs.

Bjerregaard needs room off the tee and although courses don’t get much easier than the Victoria in Vilamoura, the scoring in Turkey has been historically low. He finished T26 at the Montgomerie Maxx Royal and is better than his 80/1 quote.
