Travelers Championship Tip: Trey Mullinax
Ranked second in strokes gained tee-to-green at the US Open but this was no fluke after his top-20 at the St. Jude Classic.
Regular readers will know what a big fan I am of Trey Mullinax and he showed his big time potential with a T9 finish at the US Open. What was partlciaurly impressive is the way he responded to a double bogey on the back-9 with three consecutive birdies, ultimately enough to see him qualify automatically for next year’s US Open.
The result stunned most onlookers but there were hints it was coming. Mullinax came through sectional qualifying to reach Erin Hills and then followed it up with a T18 at the St. Jude Classic.
One of the biggest hitters on tour and a good putter, Mullinax had been losing strokes to the field with his approaches to the green but that all changed in Memphis as he ranked 10th for approaches. He backed that up by ranking 16th for the same metric at Erin Hills and finished the tournament ranked second in strokes gained tee-to-green.
Unusually it was the putter that let him down but that won’t take long to fix. He can keep the good times rolling at the Travelers. Back him at 150/1 with Betfred and get 6 places at 1/4 odds.
