Travelers Championship: Patrick Cantlay

Shot a then course record 60, back in 2011 as an amateur. Clearly likes the course and finished T15 last year despite losing strokes putting. Lack of recent outing can be overlooked in favour of course form.

The Travelers marks Patrick Cantlay’s first start since the hiatus and normally you’d be worried about rust in the game but that doesn’t apply to the 28-year-old. He is normally lightly raced during the best of times and his game rarely disappears; he’s only missed four cuts since the start of 2017 (62 events).

Before the break it was hard to pick holes in his game. Second for GIRs, sixth in strokes gained tee-to-green, 16th in adjusted scoring average. What I really like is the course angle.

Back in 2011 he finished T24 at this event as an amateur, including shooting 60 in the second round - then a course record. Since then his record at TPC River Highlands reads 24-MC-MC-15-15 and last year’s result deserves an upgrade because it was achieved despite losing strokes to the field putting.

Usually players with this level of course form are shorter than normal but his lack of a recent outing has seen the layers dangle the carrot. I’m biting.
