Transitions Championship Tips: Webb Simpson

Finished second here last year and was going well at Doral until the distraction of playing with Tiger ruined his good work.

Webb Simpson had an uncharacteristic meltdown last week at Doral. A five-over par round on Sunday dropped him 27 places to T35. It was a poor finish but the bookmakers have overreacted by pricing him at 22/1 (Coral) for the Transitions Championship. Any player can have a bad day at the office but for Simpson there were mitigating circumstances.

Firstly, he had to play his final round with Tiger Woods, which is not easy with the commotion that follows him. This was compounded by Woods limping for half the round before retiring hurt after 11 holes; an unwanted distraction that cannot have helped his playing partner.

Twice a winner on tour in 2011, Webb Simpson is a high quality player. His record at Copperhead is also excellent. He finished T13 in 2010 and bettered that with a second place last year. If it wasn’t for a bogey on the last hole it was a tournament he could have won.

Excuse his final round at Doral and focus on his form at Copperhead because the 22/1 available with Coral looks generous. Back him each way and get ¼ odds for a top-five finish.
