14th Jul 2020 | The Memorial Tournament

The Memorial Tip: Corey Conners

Since restart he is gaining 1.16 strokes per round tee-to-green. Elite level ball-striking but finishes of 19-21-MC-39 undersell his form. Needs putter to heat up and this a stacked field, but capable.

Henrik Norlander outperformed his odds last week and the logic on focusing on ball-strikers post-lockdown make sense. The leaderboard at the Workday was stacked full of elite ball-strikers and all of them had been showing up well in strokes gained tee-to-green since the Tour restarted. Playing on the same course, the same names will appear atop the leaderboard, interspersed with the big guns who had last week off.

One player the market has underrated slightly is Corey Conners. Since the restart he has finished 19-21-MC-39 and each time he made the cut he finished no lower than T6 for GIRs. The Canadian has been excellent tee-to-green and if you include his missed cut at the Travelers he has been gained 1.16 strokes per round on the field. To put that into context, those numbers would rank him 14th over the season, above Jon Rahm.

Two visits to Muirfield Village have produced finishes of T65-T39 but his game looks made for this venue; we await the putter heating up. This is a deep field but he was a winner on tour last season and is clearly swinging the club well.
