The Greenbrier Classic Trends

The Greenbrier Classic has produced first time winners in three of the last four seasons, could we have another surprise winner this week?

The PGA Tour visits The Old White TPC for the Greenbrier Classic but with only five previous editions of the tournament, trends are thin on the ground.

Stuart Appleby won in 2010 with a score of -22, including a magical round of 59. Since then the course has toughened up, the greens are firmer and 256 yards have been added.

Top-80 on tour in putting between 15-20 feet
In 2013 Jonas Blixt putted his way to victory and four of the last five champions have all been strong in the 15 to 20 foot range.

Top-80 on tour in scrambling from >30 yards
The Old White TPC is a course about angles and the ability to find the right spot on the fairway. If you can’t you need to scramble well from distance.

Top-80 on tour for approach shots between 250-275 yards
A slightly spurious trend because measuring 7,287 yards, the course isn’t considered long. This type of approach shot is only needed on the 12th hole, which is a par-5 but four of the last five winners fitted the trend.

Players that fit all three trends:
David Hearn 150/1 Boylesports
Scott Pinckney 150/1 Coral
Aaron Baddeley 250/1 William Hill
Carlos Ortiz 250/1 Bet365
Blayne Barber 300/1 Paddy Power
Jhonattan Vegas 300/1 Paddy Power
Heath Slocum 500/1 Bet365
