10th Sep 2019 | The Greenbrier Classic

A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier: JJ Spaun

Course record is 29-13 and last year's finish was despite losing strokes to the field putting. Finished last season with a string of consistent results and course form makes him a contender.

Golf betting has it fair share of near misses and I always revisit selections from years gone by to see if any lessons can be learned; as regards the Greenbrier more of the same is prudent. Last year I backed JJ Spaun and although we didn’t cash with his T13 finish, he was only three shots out of the places.

The issue with Spaun last year was that he didn’t hole any putts at The Old White TPC. He lost over half a shot a round on the field putting; if he’d just had a bang average week with the putter he’d have finished T5. If he’d putted like Kevin Na he’d probably have won!

Putting is perhaps one of the biggest vagaries in golf but the 29-year-old Californian isn’t a terrible one. He’s won twice in 130 career starts and last year he ranked an impressive 44th for GIRs, so he will create plenty of opportunties this week.

Spaun didn’t go deep in the Playoffs, he missed the cut at the Northern Trust but prior to that he’d made six consecutive cuts with a best T13 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. With a course record of T29-T13 he’s taken ahead of the many new tour rookies - there will be other weeks for them.
