The Barclays Trends

The Barclays

The PGA Tour returns to Plainfield Country Club for the start of the playoffs. We examine the trends for possible winners of The Barclays.

The Barclays tournament played at Plainfield Country Club marks the start of the playoffs. The first of four tournaments that ends with the top 30 on the circuit playing in the Tour Championship.

Plainfield Country Club last hosted The Barclays in 2011 when Dustin Johnson won a curtailed 54-event because of bad weather.

With not much course form to rely on, we have looked at the profile of the last five Barclays winners, over a variety of courses, to see what type of trends these players fit.

Top-60 for GIRs
The last five winners of The Barclays have all ranked inside the top-60 on tour for GIRs. This is a peculiar trend considering the last five tournaments were on different courses. Something in the course set-up perhaps lends itself to strong approach play and it will be interesting to see if this trends persists.

Top-60 in adjusted scoring average
Each of the last five winners ranked in the top-60 on tour for adjusted scoring average. Apart from a rained softened Plainfield CC in 2011 the winning score is usually around the 12-under mark; evidence of the stiff challenge players face this week.

Top-60 all-around ranking
The last five winners were inside the top-60 for the tour’s all-around ranking. As you would expect for a field contained the best players on tour.

Top-60 ball striking
Each of the last five winners were fine ball strikers and that should continue at Plainfield CC.

Players that fit all four trends:
Jordan Spieth 6/1
Jason Day 10/1
Justin Rose 12/1
Bubba Watson 25/1
Brooks Koepka 28/1
Henrik Stenson 28/1
Louis Oosthuizen 40/1
Paul Casey 40/1
Hideki Matsuyama 50/1
Adam Scott 55/1
Robert Streb 60/1
Webb Simpson 66/1
Justin Thomas 80/1
