The Barclays Tips: Ryan Palmer

The Barclays Tips: Ryan Palmer

Finished T24 in 2012, charging through the field after a poor first round. Ranked fourth on tour for par-5 scoring.

The Barclays heralds the start of the Playoffs on the PGA Tour and the top-125 in the FedEx Cup line-up at Bethpage Black.

One of the toughest courses in the US, it hosted the Barclays in 2012 and the US Open in 2009 and 2002. That doesn’t leave us much course form to go on but expect the world’s elite to be severely tested.

Ryan Palmer doesn’t fall into that category but the world number 74 has enjoyed another consistent season making 17/20 cuts.  His strength has been par-5 scoring (fourth on tour) and that has fed into his birdie average and scoring average, both top-30 on tour.  There are only three par-5s at Bethpage but playing them well usually leads to a good position.

The 39-year-old’s only competitive visit to the Long Island course was in 2012 when T24 but Palmer made-up significant ground after an opening 75. He shot -5 for the final three days, one stroke better than eventual winner Nick Watney.

The one drawback is Palmer’s strike rate; he is 3-337 on the PGA Tour but we are compensated by the price. At 200/1 (Paddy Power) he is a cracking each-way bet with 1/5 odds for a top-7 finish.
