Northern Trust: Patrick Cantlay

Scoring average of 69.1 at TPC Boston and flies under the radar after a couple of quiet weeks. Nothing wrong with his game and showed up well in the Playoffs last year.

The Northern Trust starts the Playoffs on the PGA Tour but it’s the Dell Technologies/Deutsche Bank Championships that you want to be looking at. TPC Boston hosted the aforementioned tournaments and this week hosts the Northern Trust.

With Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy winning the last three events at TPC Boston I suspect the event will be won by another elite golfer. Patrick Cantlay arrives this week ranked 31st in the FedEx Cup but having qualified for the Tour Championship in the last three seasons we can expect another strong run from the 28-year-old.

His record at TPC Boston is T13-T24 and a scoring average of 69.1 suggest the course is a good fit. Cantlay arrives in good form if somewhat under the radar. His is 5/5 in cuts made since the return of golf but without at top-20 since the Workday Open. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with his game, he’s simply had 1 bad ball-striking round in each of his last 3 starts - it happens.

In terms of strokes gained tee-to-green and scoring average he is amongst the best on tour and fits the bill of past winners.
