Northern Trust Open: Justin Thomas

Endured a frustrating season with injury and then a freezing cold putter. Elite ball-striking still present and finally gained strokes on the field putting at the St. Jude Invitational.

With the majors done for the season the big prize on the horizon is money…..sorry the FedEx Cup. Either way there is enough incentive for players to finish the season on a high and that is what I think Justin Thomas will do.

With such a condensed schedule injury came at the wrong time for the 26-year-old and it might be he peaks a month late. Top-15 finishes at the Open and St. Jude Invitational suggest he is close to his best and we are just waiting for the putter to heat up.

The underlying numbers show there is nothing wrong with Thomas’s long game, he is second in strokes gained tee-to-green but frustratingly he is 164th in strokes gained putting. The good news is he seems to have turned a corner. The St. Jude Invitational was the first time in eight recorded starts where he gained strokes on the field putting, if he continues on this upwards trend he will be winning again soon because his ball-striking is amongst the best on tour.

Thomas played well in the Presidents Cup at Liberty National in 2017, taking 3.5 points out of a possible 5 and his record in the event (at different venues) is 16-10-6-8. Of those at the top of the market he looks the best value.
