South African Open: Louis De Jager

Late in 2017, he led the Mauritius Open going into the final round before falling back into fourth. Fired a second round 64 here last year.

Only one South African has won his national title in the past five seasons but the European challenge is slightly undermined and so early in the season i’m siding with the home players. Picking which one is the difficulty.

Charl Schwartzel is the obvious ‘big name’ but he’s had problems closing out this tournament before. The likes of Frittelli and Burmester will have plenty of supporters but the value is picking a South African before they become famous and I like the chances of Louis De Jager.

His record at Glendower is 58-55-40 but that disguises his efforts. Twelve months ago he fired rounds of 77-64-67-75 and if we focus on the good, then he stands a chance. His recent form is encouraging with a fourth place at the Mauritius Open, a tournament he led going into the final round.

It was not a complete surprise either because in 2017 he recorded 12 top-20 finishes in 24 starts, therefore he’s been playing good golf for a while now. Winner of the Tshwane Open in 2013, he can add another co-sanction event to his CV. Back De Jager with Betfair Sportsbook and get 6 places at 1/5 odds.
