Shriners Open: Trey Mullinax

Second for strokes gained off the tee last week and is driving it prodigiously long and fairly straight. Has finished 36-20-MC at this venue and two top-5 in last three starts.

Having waited the best part of three years for this bet, I thought Trey Mullinax had gone and blown it by finishing T4 at the Sanderson Farms Championship. In truth I was expecting him to be 100/1 for this event and I would have backed him at that price. Turns out he’s 200/1 and the layers clearly weren’t watching last week - he was fantastic.

After numerous injury hit campaigns, the big hitting Alabaman is back to his best, sending 300+ yards drives at will last week. Mullinax finished the tournament ranked second for strokes gained off the tee last week and TPC Summerlin is another venue where he can grip it and rip it.

What I particularly liked is that Mullinax was able to go bogey free when trying to win and he may well have but for a cold putter on Sunday. It is now two top-5 finishes in three starts for the world number 227, with the missed cut coming on the number on an unsuitable course.

His record at TPC Summerlin is 36-20-MC but could scarcely arrive in better form. This could be it.
