Shriners Open Tip: Michael Thompson
Finished last season ranked 16th for birdie average and won recently during the Web.com Final Series.
With two Web.com graduates already in my staking plan I’m going down a similar route for my final selection. Michael Thompson has 151 starts on the PGA Tour including one victory but he had to go via the Web.com Tour Finals to regain his card.
Winning the Boise Open was enough to secure his promotion back to the big league and the taste of victory will have whetted his appetite for the wraparound season. It’s not like the 31-year-old played that badly during 2016. He finished the season ranked 16th in birdie average and made 13 cuts but just couldn’t secure that big cheque.
At TPC Summerlin his ability to go deep into the red is a positive and his record at the course is 75-13-MC-50. Thompson will want to start the season well to avoid the ignominy of the Web.com Tour Finals and he is a better player than his quote of 250/1 (Skybet).
