Shriners Open: Maverick McNealy

Similar game to 2015 champion Smylie Kaufman, in that he hits it long, putts well and makes a tonne of birdies. Finished T37 last year and this is his third looks at TPC Summerlin.

At the start of last season I flagged Maverick McNealy as a rookie to latch onto and with no graduate class from the Korn Ferry Tour (sorry Taylor Pendrith) to entice we are slightly back where we started.

McNealy enjoyed a consistent campaign on the PGA Tour, finishing 68th in the FedEx Cup and bagging three top-10 finishes. His game is built around big hitting and excellent putting, reminiscent of 2015 champion Smylie Kaufman.

TPC Summerlin is also more familiar with finishes of MC-37 in two starts; last year would have been even better but for two trips to the water and a quadruple bogey on the 17th.

Last week he finished T17 at the Sanderson Farms Championship, after putting the lights out for three days. Those sort of numbers aren’t usually repeatable, with my strategy usual designed around ball-strikers but at an event where you have to make some footage on the greens, McNealy rates a good bet.

Betfred are paying 6 places at 1/5 odds.
