Club Car Championship: Trey Mullinax

This a much more suitable test than last week (finished T23). Forecast is for slightly less wind and greens are easier to hit. It therefore plays to Mullinax's strengths and not his weaknesses.

It’s getting the stage where I seem to know more about Trey Mullinax than the lives of friends and families - but they aren’t going to provide a 70/1 are they!

A winner just three starts back (albeit at the end of 2020) and was heartened to see Mullinax shrug off a missed cut with a T23 at the Louisiana Open. That was a course that wouldn’t necessarily have suited, it’s fiddly, the wind was blowing and there was a reliance on decent short game.

In truth this is where my favourite American falls down. His short game is good but not great and The Landings Club could hide some of his ills. Last year nine of the top-10 on the leaderboard hit over 75% of GIRs but that wasn’t just the cream rising to the top. The bottom ten players on the leaderboard averaged 69% of GIRs put it into context Roberto Dias his 72% on the way to victory last week. In short greens are easier to find.

With the needle pointing towards driving and putting (less so on chipping) Mullinax should fare even better this week. He finished T43 at this event late last year (the event prior to his win) and he shouldn’t be 70/1 in this company.
