The Will To Win
Will Wilcox finished T14 last year and has already shot four rounds in the 60s this season.
Along with Kyle Stanley and Smylie Kaufman the third player I backed at the Shirners Open was Will Wilcox.
The 29-year-old is a favourite in our world mainly because he is a statistical marvel. To watch his swing you’d struggled to believe he’s a scratch golfer, let alone a player who finished last season second in the tour’s all-around ranking, splitting Jason Day and Jordan Spieth
After an encouraging opening 66 at the Shriners Open the wheels rather came off in the second round. Wilcox was perhaps guilty of pressing too hard and making unforced errors, but that is understandable at a tournament where if you aren’t making birdies you end up going backwards.
I wouldn’t go overboard because of one missed cut, the previous week he finished T10 at the Frys.com.
Last year he finished T14 at the Sanderson Farms Championship despite ranking 33rd in strokes gained putting. If he heats up on the greens this week, he should go well at 25/1 (Paddy Power) with 1/5 odds for a top-7 finish. .
