Ryder Cup Top American: Tiger Woods

Improved driving accuracy makes him a more formidable foursomes opponent and has struck up an excellent partnership with Steve Stricker.

The mediocre record Tiger Woods has in the Ryder Cup is often overplayed in the run up to the event; when he was at his peak it was the only stick available to beat him with. His aura of invincibility may have gone but that creates some great betting value.

In the top American market, Tiger Woods is a best price 5/1 (Bet365). That is only a couple of points shorter than he’s been to win stroke-play tournament this year! Considering he only has to ‘beat’ eleven players as opposed to the 100+ of a normal event, it is a generous price.

The way his game has changed should also make him a lot more competitive in the Ryder Cup, particularly in foursomes. Tiger ranks 53rd for driving accuracy on the PGA Tour this year, his highest ranking since he turned pro. This should mean his playing partners have a reasonable chance of playing their second shot from the fairway, not from some outpost of a golf course that only Tiger himself can recover from.

Davis Love III also doesn’t have the worry of whom to pair with Tiger anymore. Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods won all four of their matches together in the 2009 Presidents Cup and took two out of a possible three points at Celtic Manor.

The world number 2 has regained much of his old sparkle this season, and after topping the scoring charts for the USA in the last two Ryder Cups, Tiger Woods looks excellent value to be top American at 5/1 with Bet365.
