Rocco Forte Open Tip: Marcus Armitage
Finished T38 last year and has been gaining strokes on the field tee-to-green this season. Recently finished second on the Challenge Tour.
Marcus Armitage has been a touring professional for a few years but he’s still working his way up the ladder in Europe and perhaps this could be his breakout season. A Challenge Tour graduate after a winning season in 2016, he struggled slightly when making the step up in grade.
Armitage finished last season 152nd on the Race to Dubai but closed of 2017 with top-20s in Australia and South Africa and has carried the momentum through. In April he finished T2 at the Yunnan Open on the Challenge Tour and although this is tougher he finished a respectable T38 at Verdura GC.
Big hitters dominated the upper echelons of the leaderboard and Armitage falls into that category. Currently ranked 9th in driving distance and 37th in strokes gained tee-to-green he has the tools to succeed in Italy last week. He opened with a 65 last year which shows he can play the course and he should arrive feeling optimistic about his chances.
