Puerto Rico Tips: Dawie Van Der Walt
Won twice on the web.com tour last season and best results on the PGA Tour have come at windy, coastal venues.
With the big names playing in the WGC Match Play, the Puerto Rico Open affords one of the lesser names an opportunity to step into the winner’s enclosure. Winning at any level is difficult but it’s something Dawie Van Der Walt has grown accustomed too.
Last season he won twice on the web.com tour and if he gets in contention this week, I have no qualms about him getting the job done.
Since stepping up to the PGA Tour his results have dipped but there’s been enough encouragement to support him, especially on windy coastal tracks.
The South African’s best results this season have come at the OHL Classic (T17) and Pebble Beach (T26) and he faces a similar challenge in Puerto Rico.
Last week he dropped down in grade for the Louisiana Open and although he only managed to finish T46 he opened with a round of 64.
On a track that suits, there are enough positives in his game to warrant a 2-point interest at 150/1 (Skybet).
