Portugal Masters Tip: Thomas Detry

Won on the Challenge Tour last season shooting 29-under and hits enough GIRs to give himself plenty of looks at birdie.

The Portugal Masters invariably descends into a shoot out with the last two winners reaching 23-under but the honours board is full of quality (Levy, Sullivan, Lowry etc) and Thomas Detry deserves to have his name up there with them.

The 24-year-old enjoyed an excellent amateur career, plying his trade on the US collegiate circuit and he already looks up to the grade on the European Tour. Currently ranked 20th for GIRs on tour he will create plenty of birdies opportunities and if the putter heats up he will go well.

Runner-up at the BMW International Open, he’s already proven he can compete at this level and although recent results have been mixed he’s been playing better than he’s been scoring.

Last year he won the Bridgestone Challenge on the Challenge Tour with a score of 29-under. He’s not afraid of going absurdly low and that is the challenge this week in Vilamoura.
