Portugal Masters Trends

The European Tour continues this week with the Portugal Masters. We examine the winning trends at Oceanico Victoria Golf Course.

The Portugal Masters is now in its tenth edition and having always been played on the Oceanico Victoria Golf Course there is plenty of data to call upon.

Tom Lewis won in 2011, on his third professional start but if you take him out of the equation, we have eights years’ worth of trends to examine, going back to Steve Webster in 2007.

Top-60 on tour for stroke average
Six of the last eight winners ranked in the top-60 on tour for stroke average, this excludes Tom Lewis who didn’t play enough tournaments to qualify for this metric.

Top-60 for driving accuracy
Excluding Tom Lewis, five of the last eight winners ranked inside the top-60 on tour for driving accuracy. Oceanico Victoria favours the straight hitter and isn’t a particularly long course, although Alvaro Quiros overpowered it on the way to victory in 2008. In 2015’s curtailed tournament, Alex Levy took advantage of the soft condition and was 10th in driving accuracy. Last year’s winner Andy Sullivan was 14th.

Top-60 in putts per GIR
Over the last nine years the winning score has averaged 18-under; therefore you need to make your fair share of putts. Six of the last eight winners ranked inside the top-60 on tour in putts per GIR.
