Open D’Italia Tips: Emiliano Grillo

Led the field for GIRs on the way to a T4 finish last year. Still one of the brightest prospects on tour.

Local favourites Matteo Manassero and the Molinari brothers are prominent in the betting for the Open D’Italia but the title could go to an Argentine of Italian decent in the shape of Emiliano Grillo.

The 21-year-old has long been a favourite in this column ever since his calamitous T5 at the Africa Open in February.

Grillo’s strength is his iron play. He is third on tour for GIRs and at last year’s Open D’Italia he hit 90.3% of greens on the way to a T4 finish.

Given his age there are still inconsistencies in his game, especially with the putter but recent results have been encouraging.

A T70 at the Czech Masters was better than it looked given he struggles when the wind blows and at 66/1 (William Hill) he can improve on last year’s good finish.
