Italian Open Tips: Paul Dunne

Italian Open Tips: Paul Dunne

Three top-20 in four weeks and looks primed for breakthrough win. Can get away with wayward driving at GC Milano.

This week we get to enjoy the 73rd Italian Open and it is back at the Golf Club Milano for the eighth time. Unfortunately, GC Milano has only recently returned to the rota and we only have last year’s renewal to go on.

Thankfully it proved informative. Scoring was low therefore putts must be holed but overall the set-up was generous. Fifty-one players finished the tournament double digits under par and you could spray the ball off the tee and avoid punishment. Rikard Karlberg only hit 35.7% of fairways but still won the tournament, carding only four bogeys in the process.

Driving the ball straight has been a big issue for Paul Dunne this season (ranked 212 in driving accuracy) but it might not matter in Milan.

The talented Irishman has been on my radar all season and looks to be on the verge of a big breakthrough. In the last four weeks he has finished T16-T10-MC-T16 and it is forgivable that his missed cut came at the European Masters on a tight, twisty course.

Dunne’s exploits at last year’s Open gave us a glimpse of his talent which he confirmed earlier in the year with a T13 finish at the Farmers Insurance Open on the PGA Tour. A win is imminent and the Italian Open is the ideal tournament.

He is such a great bet at 125/1 (BetVictor), I make him a rare two-point selection.
