Italian Open Tip: Jeunghun Wang

Knows how to win on the European Tour and starting to find his best form again. Ranked 15th in strokes gained tee-to-green he should enjoy a course that rewards accuracy.

The Italian Open returns to Gardagolf Club for the first time since 2003 therefore we still need to reserve judgement on what type of player it will suit. It’s the home course of Matteo Manassero and reviewing the venue on the European Tour website he said,

“My favourite thing is that you have to be very accurate with your approach play. Players that are more accurate, and not necessarily bombers, will be near the top of the leaderboard I think.”

With tree lined, dog-legged fairways he’s probably correct and that lead me to Jeunghun Wang. A two-time winner on the European Tour he has the class to win but is hard to predict. He suffered during the summer of 2017 but in the last few months he’s been showing signs of life again.

His last three starts have yielded finishes of 13-7-52 and he was on for a top-40 finish at Wentworth until making a mess of his final two holes. Ranked 44th in driving accuracy but 192nd in distance, a more technical layout should suit him and encouragingly he is ranked 15th in strokes gained tee-to-green.
