Open De Espana Tips: Emiliano Grillo

One of the best ball-strikers on tour and shot a 65 at PGA Catalunya back in 2011.

The European Tour stops off at PGA Catalunya for this week’s Open De Espana.

Built in the image of TPC Sawgrass, it is a ball-striker’s paradise and they don’t come much better than Emiliano Grillo.

He ranks 26th for driving distance, 18th for driving accuracy and 3rd for GIRs – all he does is hit fairways and greens.

With those kind of stats you’d expect a bucket load of victories but unfortunately his putting can let him down.

He famously blew a two-stroke lead in the Africa Open by taking a quintuple-bogey on the first hole but he showed immense character to finish with five straight birdies.

Since that disappointment, he’s finished T29 in Puerto Rico on the PGA Tour and T24 in China with a missed cut at the Malaysian Open in between.

The 21-year-old is one of the most exciting prospects on the European Tour and I’m positive he can learn from his mistakes.

He finished T8 at Q-School at the PGA Catalyunya Resort in 2011, a fifth round 65 at the Stadium Course being the highlight of his week.

At 100/1 (Stan James) he is a cracking each-way bet on a course that should suit his game.
