Open de Espana Tips: Chris Wood

Ranked ninth for scrambling last season and you need an excellent short-game around Valderrama.

Valderrama is often described as the ‘Augusta of Europe’ so it quite fitting that it sits immediately after the Masters on the European Tour schedule.

Chris Wood is one of a handful of players coming back from Georgia to play the event and if the first major of the season hasn’t taken its toll, he should contend.

The Englishman has experienced Valderrama before, finishing T40 in 2010 so he knows what to expect and four rounds at Augusta (finished T42) might serve as useful preparation.

The 28-year-old returns a much better player. He is a two-time winner on tour and won’t be fazed if the wind blows. For such a tall player he has a wonderful short-game, he ranked 9th on tour for scrambling last season and is safely ensconced in the top-30 again.

English golfers enjoyed a fantastic week at the Masters and Chris Wood can keep the feel-good factor going at 40/1 (William Hill).
