Genesis Invitational: Carlos Ortiz
Talented Mexican made his breakthrough at end of 2020 and can kick-on. Things went wrong when in contention at Farmers but will be stronger for it. Course record is 20-26-9-26.
There is an incredibly strong field assembled for the Genesis Invitational and although a few of the favourites might fail to deliver, there are so many strong fits for this course don’t expect many outsiders to muscle in amongst the place.
The one player I can see threatening the top-5 at a price is Carlos Ortiz. The young Mexican broke through on the PGA Tour at the end of 2020 with a win at the Houston Open and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him win again. It seems a long time ago that Ortiz was tearing it up on the Web.com Tour (now Korn Ferry Tour) with three wins in the 2014 season but that marked him out as a big talent and he is starting to fulfil that potential.
A T29 at the Farmers Insurance Open was frustrating having gotten into contention but he bounced back with a T4 at the Phoenix Open. I suspect the experience at Torrey Pines will serve him well, especially under similair leaderboard pressure at Riviera.
In four visits to this event, Ortiz has finished 20-26-9-26 and he can scarcely have arrived in better form. Stylistically it is a good fit and he is a decent each-way price with William Hill going 66/1 and 8 places at 1/5 odds.
