Oman Open Tip: Joakim Lagergren

Best form has come on the coast, on windy links-style layouts like the one he faces this week. Yet to make the weekend in three visits to Oman but that small sample is too heavily factored into price.

Course form is often heavily factored into a golfer’s price - with Joakim Lagergren the inverse has happened. This time last year the Swede finish 136th, his third missed cut in a row at Al Mouj Golf and it’s easy to assume he dislikes the place, and he may well do. However a 14 on a par 3 last year rather swayed matters and if he can get through the 5th hole unscathed he might do ok.

On paper, a windy links-style seaside course should be to his liking. He has top-10 finishes at the Dunhill Links, the KLM Open, Trophee Hassan II and Qatar Masters all good parallels to this week’s event. His one European Tour win came at the Rocco Forte Sicilian Open at not a dissimilar course so there are plenty of positive notes.

It might just be that the Oman Open doesn’t suit, but a player of his calibre shouldn’t be approaching the 175/1 mark especially in a field that lacks strength at the top of the market.
