Maybank Championship Tips: Benjamin Hebert

Terrific tee-to-green and finished T45 last year. Is 4/5 in cuts made this season.

The inaugural Maybank Championship at Royal Selangor went to Marcus Fraser and we learned plenty from the 2016 edition, just a shame we immediately change venue for Saujana GC. Measuring 7,186 yards it’s similair in length and all the holes are lined with palm trees, therefore accuracy could be more important than usual.

Looking through the top-10 last year seven players ranked higher in driving accuracy over driving distance, an unusual phenomenon in the modern game. The tournament might not change drastically at a new venue and that will suit Benjamin Hebert.

The Frenchman is currently ranked 37th on tour for driving accuracy (same as last year) and 4th in GIRs (ranked 7th last year). With those kinds of statistics, it is a wonder why he’s not won on the European Tour yet and that is probably down to experience.

Hebert is a six-time winner on the Challenge Tour so shouldn’t be scared of winning and Saujana looks an ideal test. He is 4/5 in cuts made this season and finished T45 in this tournament last year. Some of his best results have come in Asia (T7 in Thailand last year) and he can step forward in a weakened field at 140/1 (Bet365).
