John Deere Classic: Vaughn Taylor

One of the best putters on tour this season and riding a hot-streak with finishes of 13-17-58-48-4-46. Has four to-20 finishes at TPC Deere Run.

After the thrilling display from Matthew Wolff and Collin Morikawa last week the betting for the John Deere Classic is dominated by bright young things. Yes, this is the future of the game but a top-4 of Hovland, Morikawa, Niemann and Wolff seems an overreaction.

The likes of Vaughn Taylor have been to easily dismissed and the veterans could fight back this week. TPC Deere Run is traditionally low scoring and usually won by someone with a sharp short-game and a hot putter. Step forward the 43-year-old from Virginia.

Taylor is a three-time winner on tour and is enjoying another good season with three top-10 finishes the most recent of which came two starts back at the Travelers. Ranked fifth on tour for strokes gained putting he is of a similair profile to multiple-John Deere Classic winner Steve Stricker. He’s not particularly long, but straight and makes plenty of birdies.

A course record of 14-MC-12-MC-6-MC-45-48-44-MC-19-34 shows plenty of potentially and his T34 last year came despite losing strokes to the field putting. That is unusual and if normal service is resumed he could give the young upstarts something to think about.
